Southern California is synonymous with clear blue skies, warm temperatures, and beautiful beaches: an endowment from Mother Nature. It is also synonymous with, traffic, noise, crowds and pollution: an endowment from mankind. Fortunately, there is a part of Southern California that has been spared mankind’s large scale, endowment. With its idyllic, laid back, atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and crystal clear waters, Catalina Island—a part of Los Angeles county— remains largely untouched.
Located just 22 miles south west of L.A, Catalina Island, to a large degree, has escaped the tempestuous, man vs nature existence, that seems to blight the mainland. There are two major settlements, Avalon, and Two Harbors. Golf carts and bicycles are the preferred mode of transportation: traffic lights are non-existent, as are traffic jams. With a population of just under five thousand, most of the island remains as pristine as nature intended. An endless array of land, air, and water activities can be explored at visitors’ leisure. If the opportunity does arise, visit Catalina Island. Your body, heart, and soul will be lovingly soothed.
Things to do:
Land: hike the island’s jungle interior. Bike, uphill that is, and enjoy the scenic views. Camp. Golf carts and bikes are available for rent. There are numerous tours: city tours, food tours, art tours etc. Rent a golf cart and tour the island in two hours or less.
Water: para sailing, glass bottom boat tours, coastal eco tours etc.
Air: helicopter tours, parasailing, airport in the sky.
